and techniques which can be learned and practised to make the journey seem shorter
and easier.
This module is particularly relevant for Teacher Trainees and members who wish
to develop their own original embroidery works.
Each session will explore the Elements and Principles of Design such as
CONTRAST – UNITY – RHYTHM – BALANCE – MOVEMENT
in
LINE – SHAPE – COLOUR – PATTERN – TEXTURE
In order to CHOOSE and ORGANISE for a PURPOSE
Discussions and activities to illustrate each design technique and process will
enable you to produce attractive and individual pieces. As you work through
different design activities you will gain confidence and then explore your personal
design ideas and develop an individual style.

Using simple stitch techniques a large embroidered piece capturing your own
precious memories can be made in a couple of days. Stitched in Memories workshop
allows the participants to capture memories in stitch from treasured photographs
(family, friends, travel, cars, homes ....). With a very simple method a drawing
is made from the photograph, enlarged and transferred to the fabric. The background
fabric is then selected from pieces of fabric that has relevance to the memories
being portrayed. Things such as old clothes, blankets, linen or new fabric (what
you have or what you can imagine) are selected for the memories that these fabrics
hold. We will look at things such as the era, the time and place that the photograph
was taken and match the fabric to suit. Then with very simple stitch techniques
these images are turned into drawings on fabric that capture the memories of
that photograph. Parts of the image can be appliquéd using other fabrics
of memories.

Tutor: Louise Snook
Some times referred to as the Queen of Felt, Fremantle based Louise Snook completed
her Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design at Perth Central TAFE. Since graduating,
Louise runs her own small business as a teacher of textile techniques, textile
designer and community artist. Specialising in dyeing, felt making and screen
printing methods. Louise has restudied at Curtin University graduating with
a BA in Visual Arts in 2008 and is currently completing her Honours program.
As the President of the Western Australian Fibre and Textile Association (WAFTA),
Louise curated a major exhibition of 70 WAFTA members work at the Moores Gallery
in Fremantle in 2009. Louise has participated in several group exhibitions and
hopes to one day have a solo show.
What is nuno felting?
Felt has been defined as a “textile structure composed entirely of fibres physically interlocked”. The fibres are tangled using the application of moisture and friction. An example of this would be felting a woollen jumper in the washing machine!
One interesting development in contemporary felt design is the combination of wool fibres with light weight fabrics to produce innovative fabrics with interesting surface textures. As the wool fibre makes it way through the fabric it has the ability to pull with it anything adhereing to the surface. This style of felting is called Nuno or laminated felt.
At this workshop participants will experiment with various felting techniques
incorporating light weight fabrics, creating transparent windows, alternating
the ratio of wool to fabric and making pockets trapping objects like feathers
and shells. Students will understand the felt making process and begin to predict
how different fabrics will perform.
The second day will provide an opportunity to make individual projects such
as large wraps or scarves
