Although Wessex Stitchery is not a well known counted technique, it dates
back to 1843. The stitches are simple, but allow for many varied patterns
and colour combinations. Ladies will choose their own fabric and threads in
the colours of their choice to embroider a useful sewing caddy therefore making
each one individual. Although the design on the bag uses only two of the stitches,
we will explore other stitch combinations on a sample piece of linen.

Cost: $150 (Guild Members) $215 (non-M)
Tutor: Judy Rowson
Blackwork is generally a style of embroidery where the stitching is carried
out in black thread on a white (or cream) fabric. It is a style of work made
popular in England during the reign of Henry V111 and Elizabeth 1. Its popularity
then waned not reappearing until the 1920’s. It is still worked today
as a traditional work although many embroiderers now use it as a way of shading
portraits, and creating pictures. Blackwork is a counted thread technique
of embroidery where design is built up from a simple straight stitch worked
over 2 or more threads on an even weave fabric or as a surface stitch technique.
The design can be linear, geometrical, isolated units or connected, outlined
or left free. Blackwork refers more to the type of stitch i.e. double running
or Holbein and patterns rather than the colour. The beauty of this work lies
in the choice and arrangement of the fillings, which can give diversity as
well as rhythm and balance. Over the course of 3 Saturdays a file of samples
will be stitched working from graphed designs. This course is suitable for
the beginner and for those wishing to build a file and to explore further
the intricacies of the technique. The goal will be to plan and begin a piece
of embroidery that may be a picture, box top etc or a sampler suitable for
framing.

New Norcia, approximately 130 kilometres north of Perth, houses a Museum and
Art Gallery containing an inspiring collection of art and artefacts. On Monday
7th September students will travel from Perth to New Norcia by bus. After
a welcome by the Art Gallery Manager, students will disperse around the Gallery
and township to photograph, draw and record their impressions, before returning
to Perth in the late afternoon. Tuesday 8th September is a free day back in
Perth when students can have their photographs printed and gather embroidery
supplies before meeting at Guild House for the embroidery workshop on Wednesday
9th and Friday 11th September. Under Alison’s guidance each student
will develop and begin her own piece of embroidery based on her study at New
Norcia. The embroidery can be in any technique and may be traditional in its
