Many of our members belong to one or more of the Guild’s embroidery groups. Most groups meet weekly in locations across the Perth metropolitan area and regional WA. They provide a sociable and supportive environment in which to learn embroidery techniques. Most groups have a broad interest in traditional and contemporary hand embroidery. You may work on your own projects with support from other group members or join in the group’s structured learning program.

Some Groups have a specialised focus such as contemporary embroidery and textile art, lace making, or machine embroidery. Once you become a Guild member you can join as many groups as you wish. Groups charge a small fee to cover the costs of room hire.

If you are interested in joining a group contact the Group Leader for information about what to bring and to confirm the group is meeting on the days indicated.

Whether you're a seasoned needle artist or just starting to explore raised embroidery, this group offers inspiration, guidance, and a welcoming stitch circle.

What Is Raised Embroidery?

Raised embroidery creates a three-dimensional effect on fabric, making stitched elements stand out. This dimensional needlework often uses padding, wire, and layering to sculpt intricate motifs.

Key Characteristics:

Stumpwork: A 17th-century classic featuring detached elements like leaves, petals, or insects applied to the main piece.
Padding techniques: Using felt, thread, or other materials beneath stitches to lift them off the fabric.
Wirework: Shaping wire to form raised outlines or structures, often used in floral designs.
Layered stitching: Building texture with multiple stitch types like long and short stitch, satin stitch, and couching.

Raised embroidery is prized for its tactile richness and sculptural quality, turning flat textiles into miniature works of art.
