Phoenix Roundel, Chinese Embroidery
Members: $270.00
Non-Members: $540.00
For a large part of Chinese history, silk embroidery played a essential role where specialised clothing exhibited power and control through a highly controlled and strict implementation governing the use of a hierarchy of fabrics, colours and decorative imagery dictated by status protocol and also for different occasions, rituals and seasons.
Roundels or Festival squares are part of this system. They were particularly prevalent by the time of the Wanli reign (1572-1620) of the Ming Dynasty and continued into the last Imperial dynasty, the Qing dynasty. These decorated the garments of the imperial household and court officials, including their spouses, worn on different official, religious and cultural occasions eg Spring Festival, Emperor’s birthday, mid-autumn etc. The phoenix roundel is an example and, in this case, likely used by the empress or favoured concubines.
