Traditional Mountmellick Embroidery
Mountmellick Embroidery
EGWA Member - $120.00
Non-Member - $240.00
Mountmellick embroidery is known for its intricate and delicate workmanship, and remains a popular form of Irish embroidery today. It was initially taught by a lady called Johanna Carter, who lived in the town of Mountmellick in Ireland in the 1800's. She could see the need to develop a livelihood for the women and girls in the town. This initiative helped them to earn money by selling their stitched items.
Traditionally it is stitched on a white heavy cotton material and uses sturdy white cotton thread for the stitch designs. These designs were predominately flowers and leaves, especially those found around the local area. The embroidery incorporates a variety of stitches, including satin stitch, chain stitch, bullion and other knotted stitches.
You will enjoy this workshop with Faye as she teaches the stitches that are unique to this type of embroidery.
