Contemplative Cloth
Carol Cooke is an Australian Textiles artist, Author and Extreme Embroiderer. She is visiting WA and would like to share her designs and creative methods with our Guild.
Carol explores the use of traditional embroidery stitches but throw away patterns, throw away the rules and relax as you make unique embroidered art. Compose your own works of art using imagination, inventiveness, creativity and improvise. Your results will be unexpected and amazing.
Experienced embroidery technicians and newbies to stitch often want to break free and find their own style and story.
Leaving the commercial pattern behind can be daunting. The question “How do I start?” can prevent us from moving into the new space of creativity.
Contemplation Cloth breaks down the process to improve your confidence as we play together on a piece of cloth. Learn how to colour the fabric with various options, mark making and then stitching to your hearts content. Each project is quite small but by working them on one large piece of cloth you will finish a fabric reference for other works. Any self-doubt will fade as you work through each section.
Getting lost in a creative zone will bring you a sense of calm and enjoyment. You will lose yourself in this meditative process by finishing each section with embroidery. Small projects are perfect as a therapeutic medium. Ideas, testing and playing are a part of the creative process. Come with me as we make something totally created by you.
Day One
The morning will be creating your own freehand drawings and learning how to make a simple stich sample book. You will be guided on simple techniques to draw your own small flowers ready to wire or attach to the main fabric. I will demonstrate how to apply colour and also colour your own thread during the class.
In the afternoon you will apply these techniques to the cloth provided. At all times I will be rotating around the room to help each individual work on design, stitches and techniques.
Day Two
We will talk about design ideas, reviewing samples completed by the tutor. You will go home with ideas on how to work with all these techniques to make a larger work of art.
Stitches are generally simple, but I am available to teach beginners or review more complex stiches as required.
