Deerfield Harmonies Pillow Sham
Deerfield Harmonies
Member Cost $140.00
Deerfield embroidery is a type of surface embroidery, traditionally worked in shades of blue on a white linen background.
This delightful blue and white pillow sham is finished with a cotton edging but could easily be a cushion or bag
The designs are similar to Jacobean Crewelwork designs, but finer threads and fabrics are used. It was first seen in the small town of Deerfield in Massachusetts in the USA. Developed to help the economy by giving women a chance to earn an income by selling their work.
It is an attractive technique, and we invite you to join Deborah to learn more about how to stitch these beautiful motives, making a lovely cushion or pillow sham.

Deborah began her embroidery steps as a Queensland schoolgirl. Her Grade 6 teacher, Miss Peacock, taught a sampler of stitches within the Clermont State School’s curriculum. After many stamped doilies, rosebud booties and embroidered handkerchiefs so typical of the late 1960s, she did little embroidery until moving to Canberra in 1991 and discovered Paddy Hornsby’s Affinity Plus embroidery shop, with talented embroiderers like Dianna Lampe and Kaye Pike.
Moving to Perth in 1992, she joined The Embroiderers’ Guild of Western Australia, Claremont branch and started teaching floral embroidery while still exploring many other forms of embroidery. After moving back to Brisbane in 1993 and joining The Embroiderers’ Guild, Queensland, she undertook the 2-year Introduction to Embroidery course.
Whitework embroidery in its many forms became the technique of choice. Deborah has travelling extensively to visit the ‘heartland’ of many types of embroidery techniques.
These include Mountmellick in Ireland, the small town of Deerfield in America and viewed a collection of early American Deerfield pieces.
She also visited Luzine Happel in Eschwege, Germany researching Schwalm white work.
Deborah is a qualified Tutor for both the Queensland and NSW Guilds, specialising in Mountmellick, Deerfield, Schwalm, Hemstitching, and Drawn Thread as well as general stitches.
Various items of Mountmellick, Schwalm and Deerfield work have been published in Inspirations and Cross Stitch & Embroidery magazines.
In 2017, she won Ireland’s inaugural international Mountmellick competition.
Embroidery has embellished her life creatively, broadened her friendship groups and greatly enhanced her appreciation of the many talented embroiderers in our world. Deborah shares her passion for embroidery, teaching and sharing of knowledge and skills, to ensure that older techniques are not lost to ‘tomorrow’s embroiderers’ but brought into today’s world.
