Have you ever wanted to feel more confident about colour? Wondered why some colour schemes work and others (ahem…) don’t?  Dreaming of becoming independent of commercial fabric and others’ designs? How to turn your stitching skills into articles that don’t need frames or walls and are useful or can be displayed in other ways? How to make stuff that doesn’t need a big shopping trip to be successful but is still enviable? Want to have fun trying out new things in a risk-free environment?

This series is an integrated set of classes over four days that takes you from white fabrics and threads to a rainbow of materials, then shows you a wide range of things you can do with them. It’s going to appeal particularly to those who want to take the next step from using bought materials and purchased designs to realising that you, too, can be a creator!

Twelve-piece colour wheel and 8 tints of green.

On day one we dye, using procion dyes and supplied cotton fabric, a 12-piece colour wheel and 8 tints of one colour.  This will give everyone the skills and experience to dye their own fabrics, including safety procedures.  Over lunch we will talk about tomorrow and how to achieve particular effects.

On the second day, everyone will use a supplied kit of cotton, silk and other fibres in fabric and thread plus other goodies.  You will choose your favourite colour or colours (2 or 3) and dye the pieces in the kit in that colour-way.  You’ll get plenty of advice if you want it. We will also briefly discuss, and have samples, of what you can do with the dyed pieces from the kit.  You will be encouraged to think about what you might do with your dyed “stash” in the 3 weeks between these dyeing days and the next two days, of the workshop.

Day 3 will be “stitching with your hand dyed fabrics and threads”.   During this day, if you want to, you will share your ideas, get ideas from others and from your tutors.  We will talk about the implications of the shape and size you want to make for stitch/motif placement.  We’ll cover different construction options for support and cushioning articles including interfacings and Pellon. We will also talk about the effectiveness of simple stitches in blending different fabrics and to create texture.   Everyone should be able to start their stitching and feel confident that they can produce a stitched fabric in preparation for Day 4.

Project roll and book cover with hand-dyed fabrics and threads

The fourth day will be “Creating a finished piece with your hand dyed, hand stitched fabric”.   You will be helped to construct your piece either by hand or machine.  There will be detailed construction notes on several of the options. You will be assisted to construct your project.
