Description:

In this workshop you will learn how to produce a free-motion machine embroidered panel while making an easy vase and decorating it with freeform fabric flowers and leaves.

You will have a choice of three designs, or create one of your own.

Finish off by making your panel into something special, frame it to display,  make a block to add to a quilt, make a beautiful cushion or use the panel to decorate a bag. The choice of finish is yours.

No experience of free-motion machine embroidery is necessary. You can use your domestic sewing machine, just so long as you can drop or cover the feed dogs which can be found in the needle plate, directly beneath the presser foot.

What to bring

  • A sewing machine, in good working order, that can drop or cover the feed dogs.  If you need to cover them, please bring the cover plate with you.
  • The sewing machine manual to go with your sewing machine.
  • Sewing box with sharp scissors – including a small pair of scissors, pins or clips etc.
  • Scraps of fabric in your choice of colours.  These can be patterned or plain and can be used to make the vase and to cut the flowers and leaves  from.  The scraps need to be at least 1½” (38mm) square.  If you would like the vase to be a different colourway from your flowers bear that in mind when choosing your fabric scraps.
  • Sewing machine Embroidery Needles size 80/12 (I prefer the Schmetz brand).
  • 2 or 3 empty bobbins for your sewing machine.
  • 7-8” (18-20.5cm) hoop that will fit under your sewing machine presser foot (a Spring hoop is a good choice).
  • White Bobbin Thread (for use in the bobbin when sewing in the metallic or grey thread).
  • Free motion presser foot or darning foot.
  • A pen with removable ink – such as a Frixion pen.
  • A pencil
  • A black permanent marker (optional)

If you have decided to make your completed vase of flowers panel into something in particular, please bring the extras needed to finish your project e.g. a picture frame (preferably a box frame); Canvas or extra fabric to complete your chosen project.
