Description:

What comes to mind when you hear “smocking”?

Smocking is often associated with Christening gowns and little girls' dresses, but evidence exists that smocking was used as far back as the 1300s to add fullness and comfort to adults’ garments.  It can be both decorative and functional.

There are many possibilities for using smocking, not just on children’s and adults’ clothing, but also for accessories and decorations, using fabrics ranging from simple gingham or homespun to exquisite silks.

This project introduces often-used smocking stitch combinations, using silk floss and metallic thread on pleated dupion silk fabric.  Once the smocking is completed, construction involves covering the polystyrene ball with the smocked silk, then attaching the ribbons and a bead cap to complete the beautiful Christmas ornament.
