Don't miss out - Registrations are still open May for Gail Hawes' talk "Bower Birds and Magpies - Gold and Metal" on 9 May during the 2024 Heritage Festival.
Join Gail as she uses her collection to bring to light the many and extensive ways in which gold and metal have been used for adornment.
Who is Gail Hawes?
For those who do not know Gail Hawes, she has been a collector of embroidered textiles for the past 40 years. Her collection is very extensive and covers a wide range of embroidery techniques from throughout the world.
Bower Birds and Magpies will be telling a little about Gail's collecting philosophy. She started to understand the possibility of collecting when seeing Indian Tribal textiles in London in the mid 1980's. Not only did she study the embroidery but began to understand the social stories relating to the 'Toran' - Indian door hangings. This has sparked a life-long passion for revealing the stories behind embroideries and how these pieces impact the lives of those who make them.
