World Embroidery Week 2026

The Embroiderers Guild of Western Australia is delighted to announce its theme for World Embroidery Week 2026: a celebration of the textile traditions that have accompanied people throughout life's journey.

Drawing on pieces from the Guild's collection and private lenders, this week-long exhibition will explore how embroidery has been used across cultures to mark important milestones, express identity and strengthen community connections.

Visitors will encounter embroidered objects associated with birth and childhood, including christening gowns, bonnets, baby carriers and traditional embroidered hats. The exhibition then moves into the world of dowries and marriage, showcasing the linens, garments, ceremonial textiles and treasured possessions prepared for brides in cultures spanning Europe, Central Asia and the Indian Ocean region.

Wedding traditions from Japan, Southeast Asia, China and Europe will reveal the richness and diversity of embroidered ceremonial dress. A section devoted to global luxury will highlight exquisite textiles and accessories that travelled across continents through trade and commerce, while the final section, Work and Authority, explores embroidery associated with the church, government, courtly rank and working life.

More than a display of beautiful objects, this exhibition tells the story of how embroidery has helped communities express their values, beliefs and identities for generations.
